The Preppy style has always fascinated me in a way that It’s hard for me to explain! Looking at the campaigns of Tommy Hilfiger or Ralph Lauren (for example), and seeing all these good looking guys wearing chinos, and mixing them extremely well with a varsity jacket while enjoying their perfect American Ivy college league setting, made me have rose tinted glasses for this particular style.
As I’ve discussed previously on another post about my own particular style, I have a very versatile sense of fashion. But having said that, I do tend to inject a lot of the prep style into my wardrobe.
It may be for the beige trousers, the classic blue shirt with no tie, or a pair of brogues and suede derby shoes, I’ve always much preferred these smart casual items than the more formal counterparts (ties, pocket squares, evening wear and so on) on a day to day basis.
If you are into preppy style, here’s a few of my tips:
1)DO wear penny loafers, boat shoes and brogues. They are all perfectly “prep-style” acceptable shoes! Avoid wearing trainers.
2)DON’T wear jeans as they aren’t exactly fit for purpose, instead try to swap skinny jeans for a pair of chinos, or smart trousers. Khaki, Beige, Mustard and Navy are all incredible colours that are easy to style and match. Also, Burgundy, and brighter colours such as yellow, can be used during the winter season, or the summer (pastels, and bright colours for SS)
3)DON’T forget what you like. Don’t copy too much from movies or campaigns. You can still get inspiration from them, but you should still put your own individual style first. Whether it’s through accessories, such as bags or watches. or through specific colours
Once again, I’ve had the pleasure to team up with one of my favourite brands of all time; Tommy Hilfiger and I’ve decided to style one of their Varsity Jackets which is part of the brands 30th anniversary collection. Made of wool blend and featuring a red tartan check on the back, this jacket was a no-brainer, with plenty of little touches that make this jacket incredibly special (like the jacket patches number 30 on the American football, and the H of Hilfiger). Matching the jacket, I’ve worn a pair of classic cut Khaki trousers and a pair of penny loafers- PREP STYLE!
